Tuscaloosa Race Relations Initiative Encourages Residents to Take Active Role in School Superintendent Search

This week the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education will begin interviews for the next superintendent of our city’s schools.

An article in the June 19 edition of The Tuscaloosa News includes a list of the six candidates.

You can also find the candidates’ applications on the Tuscaloosa News Web site.

At both of the  Tuscaloosa Race Relations public meetings held in 2010 (at Central High School and Alberta Elementary School) and our latest round of action groups in 2011, the issue of education has taken centerstage.

Thus, it is critical that the residents of our city, even as we rebuild and recover after the April 27th tornado, be actively involved in the selection of the next leader of our city schools.

The interviews for each of the candidates are open to the public. And, the community will be invited to meet with two finalists who are selected from the pool of applicants who are interviewed.

The TRRI believes this is a golden opportunity to take action in helping our community move forward.

Tuscaloosa Race Relations Initiative

invites you to attend:

Public Signs of Racism

Monday November 29, 2010
6:00 pm
Alberta Elementary School Multipurpose Room
2700 University Blvd. East
Tuscaloosa, AL 35404

(English/Spanish translation available.)

Creating a common vision and strategy to solve Tuscaloosa’s most challenging problems requires a unified community. Yet public displays of racism, whether intended or not, hamper our ability to find common ground and work together. We believe that it is important to define what racism looks like and feels like in these situations. In our discussion we will confront the meaning of these signs from different perspectives of our community.

This is the second in a planned series of opportunities to share, listen
and learn about the state of race relations in our community. There will also be an update on activities from the last meeting and information on Action Groups that will form in January. Bring a friend!

Hey Tuscaloosa! Let’s get it out in the open!

IS THERE A RACE RELATIONS PROBLEM IN TUSCALOOSA?
New organization co-sponsoring an open-invitation, group
dialogue to explore that question and find solutions

Solving Tuscaloosa’s most difficult problems requires that all stakeholders work together for a common goal.  Yet, the creation of a common vision and strategy is often  hampered by real and perceived disparities between different segments of our community.  Finding that unified course of action requires our communities to get beyond superficial differences.  Opening an honest dialogue between the races is necessary to move forward and find a set of common, core beliefs that can lead to solutions.

Later this month Tuscaloosa Race Relations Initiative, in cooperation with other organizations (Just Us, Tuscaloosa Education Network and OneTuscaloosa), will hold the first in a series of opportunities for dialogue and learning which will ultimately lead to solutions of some of our community’s most difficult problems. The first session will utilize a discussion-group format so that there is opportunity for everyone to speak and to listen.
